The ground troops of the Japan Self-Defense Forces have benefited from a recent infusion of resources, upgrading the equipment and training of the force despite persistent difficulties with recruitment. The average JSDF rifleman is typically skilled and determined, with a particular emphasis on defensive tactics.

Although the newer Howa Type 20 is scheduled to replace it, most JSDF ground troops still wield the Type 89 assault rifle.
